BRONX, NY – New York University made an early goal stood up as the Violets defeated the University of Rochester men's soccer team 1-0 in a UAA conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park.
Â
Neither team could muster very many chances as only 10 shots were taken in the contest along with a total of six corner kicks. Rochester (8-3-3, 1-2-2 UAA) held the host Violets without a shot in the second half and ended the game with a 6-4 edge in attempts, also holding the advantage in corners by a 4-2 margin.
Â
The Violets (8-6-2, 2-3 UAA) were able to strike in the opening ten minutes, scoring the games lone goal at 7:12. Robert Shellow dribbled the ball along the left side in the offensive zone and sent a cross into the box where it deflected off a Yellowjacket defender, finding Owen Smith inside where he would chip the ball right over UR goalie
Patrick Conway for the goal.
Â
Rochester would get its best scoring chance of the game in the 20th minute when
Mitch Volis slipped a pass through the NYU defense to teammate
Jeff Greblick for a point blank chance, but the seniors attempt was saved at the right post by Violet goalie Lucas Doucette.
Â
Two-thirds of the way through the first half, Greblick found teammate
Cristian Baltier in a similar situation, sending a pass through the defense along the right side, but Baltier's shot wound up going wide of the net.
Â
Ten minutes before halftime, NYU earned a free kick at the edge of the box, but Conway made a nice save on Tristan Medios-Simon, punching the hard shot high of the bar.
Â
The second half turned into a physical battle between the teams as 17 of the 25 fouls in the game took place after the break, with the addition of two yellow cards.
Â
Rochester's defense would clamp down and not surrender a shot over the final 45 minutes, but NYU would hold the Yellowjackets to three attempts as well, with only one generating a solid scoring chance.
Â
In the 53rd minute, after UR was awarded a free kick at the edge of the box,
Geoffrey Rouin received the ball 15 yards out following a deflection in front but his attempt was sent high of the NYU goal.
Â
Rochester would apply offensive pressure for the remainder of the half, generating two corner kicks with under seven minutes to play, but neither attempt turned into a legitimate chance for the Yellowjackets.
Â
UR returns to action on Sunday with another UAA road test, this time the 'Jackets will take on Brandeis University at 1:30 pm.
