FAUVER STADIUM –
Jean Chakmakas headed home a corner kick in the final minute of the first half and Rochester defended that lead for a 1-0 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday evening.
Â
The Yellowjackets earned their fourth win of the year and their second in a row. Rochester is 4-6-5 overall. RIT is 7-8-1 overall.
Â
Madilynne Lee made three saves to earn her first shutout this year. She has shared a shutout as well. Kelly Rogers had two saves for RIT and teammate Kerri Zalba kicked a UR shot off the line in the 37
th minute, when the game was still scoreless.
Â
Both halves followed a familiar pattern: Rochester attacked consistently for the first 20 minutes before RIT found its footing and started challenging the Yellowjacket defense at the other end.
Â
Rochester had a good chance before the game was three minutes old. A corner kick by
Megan Runyan from the left side found sister
McKenzie Runyan outside the right side of the crease. Her header struck the post and the Tiger defense was able to scramble the ball away.
Â
RIT's first good chance came in the 21
st minute. Abbey Saia tried a 25-yarder from deep on left wing that Lee caught high before it reached the top corner of the net.
Â
Jorie Freitag figured in two good attacks later in the period. With less than 12 minutes left in the opening half, her close-range shot was blocked by a defender and
Dani Aceves cork-screwed a followup wide of the right post. Shortly thereafter, Freitag forced a good save from Rogers. Aceves got to the rebound, but her followup was blocked.
Â
Pamela Chan wasn't able to convert on an open net in the 37
th minute. Zalba dashed to the spot and kicked the shot away.
Â
The 0-0 deadlock ended in the 45
th minute.
Megan Runyan played a corner out of the left side to the near post. It bounced off a couple of players across the goalmouth to Chakmakas at the right doorstep. She headed it into the net. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the year, and eventually, her second gamewinning goal.
Â
RIT narrowly missed an equalizer in the 58
th minute. A corner kick into the center of the crease bounced off a series of shoulders over to Riley Yankovich at the right post. Her five-yard header was punched away by Lee who used both hands to deflect it to the attacking right and the UR defense was able to clear.
Â
Emily Thiel attacked down the right flank with 25 minutes left but her 10-yard shot was blocked by the UR defense. Sami Alur scrapped for the ball for RIT and several times got into the box but wasn't able to create the necessary danger for an equalizer.
Â
With 10 minutes to go, Thiel took a pass inside the box angling right to left. She tried to play it through to Kathleen Ferguson going in the other direction (left-to-right). The defense cut the pass off. If completed, it would have given Ferguson a clean look at the net from a short distance away.
