BRONX, NY – The University of Rochester women's soccer team had its share of chances, but came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision at the hands of host New York University on Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park in a UAA conference matchup.
Â
Rochester (4-7-5, 1-3-1 UAA) had an advantage on the stat sheet, taking 13 shots to NYU's seven along with earning five of the nine corner kicks in the game. UR's defense also held the Violets (10-3-3, 1-2-2 UAA) to just two shots on goal, but unfortunately both found the back of the net for the one goal victory.
Â
The Yellowjackets attacked early, earning two corners and three shots in the opening ten minutes, including one by freshman
Jorie Freitag off a corner at the 9:45 mark which was saved by NYU keeper Cassie Steinberg.
Â
NYU would then strike first on the scoreboard at 13:06 when Lexi Clarke hit a left footed curling shot from 25 yards out in the middle of the field that sneaked right under the bar, past the outstretched arms of Rochester starting goalie
Madilynne Lee. Ashlyn Krygowski picked up the assist on the play after settling the ball and finding Clarke just outside the box.
Â
In the closing minutes of the opening half, the Violets had a chance to build the lead to 2-0, but Meredith Hackerson's shot off of a corner kick went wide of the Yellowjacket net.
Â
Freitag scored the lone UR goal.
Two and half minutes into the second half,
Paige Gloster had her first strong scoring chance of the game when she sent a shot wide following a long volley up from the left side.
Â
Ten minutes later, the Yellowjackets would even the score on Freitag's fourth goal of the season. After a throw in, Gloster got the ball following a scramble and sent a cross that was missed by an NYU defender, sliding right to the foot of Freitag who had a one-on-one chance with Steinberg, beating the Violet keeper to the top right corner of the net.
Â
Then in the 68th minute, Freitag had another similar one-on-one opportunity after running past an NYU defender which this time was saved by Steinberg, keeping the score deadlocked at 1-1.
Â
With 14 minutes left on the clock,
Jean Chakmakas unleashed a shot from the top of the box which bounded directly off the right post, nearly giving the Yellowjackets the lead.
Â
NYU would then turn the tables, scoring the game winner from Alex Benedict in the 80th minute. After getting the ball on the left wing following a scrum, Benedict found the perfect place for her shot, beating
Samantha Hlavac, UR's keeper in the second half, with another big curving shot that wound up in the top right corner of the net.
Â
Neither Lee or Hlavac ended with a save in the UR goal while Steinberg made four saves for the Violets. Both Freitag and
McKenzie Runyan finished with a game high four shots while Gloster had three for the Yellowjackets.
Â
Rochester returns to action on Sunday morning at 11 am with a matchup at #17 Brandeis University.
