Rochester Slides Past #17 Brandeis 1-0

WALTHAM, MA – The University of Rochester women's soccer team upended #17 Brandeis University 1-0 to close out the road portion of its schedule on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field.

Rochester (5-7-5, 2-3-1 UAA) got a goal from sophomore Kerri Eden in the 29th minute, scoring off one of UR's three corner kicks in the contest.  The host Judges drop to 13-3-2 and 2-3-1 in the UAA.

The Judges nearly opened the scoring at the 8:44 mark in the first half, but Lea McDaniel's shot was cleared off the line by 'Jacket defender Guiliana Vasile for a team save.

Brandeis goalkeeper Alexis Grossman made two key saves in the opening 17 minutes, thwarting early offensive pressure from the visiting 'Jackets.  At 13:11, a long free kick bounded through the box to an open Kim Stagg, but her attempt was saved.  Three minutes later, Lee Stagg took a shot from the left wing that was punched away by a diving Grossman in the Brandeis net.

In the 20th and 21st minute, the Judges had two chances to grab the lead.  The first, a shot by Hannah Maatallah was saved away by UR keeper Samantha Hlavac leading to a corner kick.  On the ensuing corner, a header by Lea McDaniel sailed wide.

At 28:53, Eden gave the Yellowjackets the lead, scoring the only goal of the game coming off a corner kick from teammate Megan Runyan.  Runyan's corner was initially flicked by freshman Jorie Freitag to an open Eden who slammed in her first goal of the season.

In the second half, Brandeis took two corner kicks and had three shots in the opening six and half minutes, but the UR defense stood tall, blocking one shot along with Hlavac making one of her six saves in the contest.

Paige Gloster nearly made it 2-0 in favor of Rochester in the 59th minute, but Grossman made another diving save, handing it to a defender on a shot from the left side, keeping it a one goal game.

Over the final 20 minutes of the contest, the Judges really applied pressure trying to score the equalizer.  In the 82nd minute, Sasha Sunday had two attempts cleared off the line, the first by the UR defense and her follow up attempt was saved by Hlavac in the goal.  Brandeis earned a corner kick in the process, but Cidney Moscovitch's shot following the set piece went high.

Brandeis earned the game's final corner kick at the 88-minute mark, but Hlavac broke up the chance by catching the corner before it could reach a Judges player in the box.

Rochester's final game is slated for this coming Saturday against Emory University.  Kick-off is slated for 5 pm and will feature a senior day ceremony prior to the start of the contest.
