UR Defense Stands Tall to Halt Geneso Streak

FAUVER STADIUM – Rochester's defense held SUNY Geneseo to a total of four shots and went on to a 3-2 field hockey win on Friday evening.

The Yellowjackets had to be as stingy as possible on defense. The Knights came in to the stadium riding an eight game winning streak. In that run, Geneseo outscored its foes 35-4.

Rochester improved to 15-3 overall. Geneseo is 9-9. UR is ranked #14 in Division III in this week's poll conducted by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Gabrielle Cantley made one save and allowed one first half goal for Rochester. Kiran Sundaram had equivalent numbers – one save and one goal allowed. For Geneseo, Nicole Gregg made one save in 70 minutes.

Callie Fisher scored two goals for the Yellowjackets and Nancy Bansbach had one goal. Maya Haigis had an assist. Giovanna Fasanello and Tess Necaise picked up goals for the Knights. Liz Doherty assisted on the Necaise goal.

Rochester built up penalty corners early and had eight in the first half, 10 total for the game. Geneseo had two penalty corners.

The Yellowjackets finally got on the scoreboard with a penalty stroke, indirectly following a penalty corner. During the scramble after the PC, a Rochester shot struck the leg of a Geneseo player on the goalline with Gregg off her line. Officials awarded the PS and Fisher converted at 26:28 for a 1-0 lead.

Just under three minutes later, they doubled the lead. Haigis broke down the right side of the circle, lined a low cross in front, and Bansbach tapped it in at 29:21.

Geneseo cut the deficit in half 90 seconds before halftime. Fasanello weaved through the defense on the right and scored to the far left side at 33:33.

Fisher boosted the lead to 3-1 at 37:51. She swept into the circle on the right and fired for the short side, getting it into the cage before Gregg could block it. Gregg made a good save five minutes later, pushing a shot from Rochester's Colleen Maille wide from 14 yards out.

The Knights made it interesting when Doherty and Necaise hooked up for the second goal at 46:54. Doherty shot from the right side near the top of the circle and Necaise was stationed at the right doorstep to deflect it in.
