CHICAGO, IL – 11th ranked University of Chicago scored a late goal to defeat the visiting University of Rochester women's soccer team 1-0 in UAA play on Saturday at Stagg Field.
Â
The Maroons improve to 10-1 overall on the year and are now 1-1 in the UAA after a conference opening loss at Emory last week. Rochester moves to 2-5-4 on the year and is also 1-1 in the UAA after defeating Washington-St. Louis last week.
Â
Chicago's Rachel Dias scored the game winner for the home team in the 80th minute when she kicked home a cross from teammate Clare Suter who had her pass set up by Caroline Olivero. Dias was unmarked on the left side, and slipped her shot past UR goalkeeper
Madilynne Lee for the only score of the contest.
Â
Overall in the game, Lee was fantastic in the net for the Yellowjackets, making seven stops, a season high for the junior keeper.
Â
The Yellowjackets would apply offensive pressure early, with freshman
Jorie Freitag taking a shot in the 3rd minute and teammate
McKenzie Runyan firing a shot on goal in the 12th minute. Both attempts were thwarted by UC keeper Katie Donovan who made a save on each.
Â
At 16:15, Rochester earned the games first corner kick and turned it into a scoring opportunity, but Runyan's blast went high of the bar.
Â
Chicago then flipped the script, moving the play into UR's defensive zone, earning three straight corner kicks in the 24th and 25th minute. The first resulted in a Kelsey Moore shot that was saved by Lee, the next yielded a header shot by Lily Wolfenzon that went wide while the third corner was defended away by the Yellowjackets.
Â
In the second half, the Maroons would again have another flurry of chances, coming in the form of five corner kicks and four shots over a seven minute span.
Â
Rochester had two shots on goal in the second half, coming at 63:41 and 85:39 from
Lee Stagg and Freitag respectively. Both attempts were saved by Donovan in goal.
Â
Rochester is now off until next Friday when the Yellowjackets play host to Carnegie Mellon University at 5 pm. The UAA weekend continues next Sunday when Case Western Reserve comes to Fauver Stadium for an 11 am start.
