Softball Edged Late by NYU at UAA Champs

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – NYU rallied for three runs in the last two innings to edge Rochester, 5-3, at the UAA Championships. The Violets scored one in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3, then tacked on two more in the seventh. Rochester is 1-4 in the UAA competition, 3-6 overall. NYU is 2-3 in UAA play, 3-6 overall.
 
Sam Malecki pitched the first 4.1 innings. She allowed three hits, two runs (both earned), walked two, and struck out three. Eleni Wechsler relieved. In 2.2 innings, she gave up four hits, three earned runs, walked one and struck out one. Karissa Zubulake pitched a complete-game victory for NYU. The Yellowjackets had four hits off her. Zubulake walked two, hit one, and struck out three.
 
NYU scored single runs in the first and second. Rochester tied the score in the fourth. Laurelle Byrne-Cody singled. Wechsler bunted her over and Byrne-Cody was able to reach third. Lauren Muni walked. A passed ball scored Byrne-Cody and advanced Muni to second.  A single by Rachael Pletz was misplayed. Muni advanced to third and Pletz took second. Gianni Melillo reached on a fielder's choice which scored Muni to knot it at 2-2.
 
In the fifth, Shelby Corning was hit by a pitch. Harleigh Kaczegowicz singled her to third. Byrne-Cody struck out with Kaczegowicz moving to second. Wechsler's groundout scored Corning.
 
NYU tied it in the sixth on a single, a sacrifice, a passed ball, and a wild pitch. The Violets went ahead in the seventh. A single, another single with a misplay put runners on second and third. The third single of the inning brought both runners home.  In the bottom of the seventh, Zubulake set down the Yellowjackets in order.
