Ghyzel Fans 12 Engineers; RPI Salvages Split DH vs UR

TROY, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team earned its second straight split doubleheader with host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to open up Liberty League play on Sunday afternoon at Robison Field.

UR (7-6, 2-2 Liberty League) scored in six of seven innings in game one, en route to a 10-1 victory, but couldn't earn the sweep as the Engineers (3-14, 2-2 Liberty League) rebounded with a 10-6 win in game two.

For the second straight day, the Yellowjackets rode a strong pitching effort in game one, this time earning a complete game from sophomore John Ghyzel.  Ghyzel allowed just five hits, one run and struck out 12 batters, one shy of the single-game Rochester record in the victory, moving to 3-0 on the season.

Ghyzel's 12 strikeouts are the 2nd most in a single game in UR history.

Offensively, Rochester scored one run in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings, added two in the 4th and broke it open with four runs in the 5th.  Another single run made the score 10-1 after the sixth inning.

Eight of UR's nine starters had at least one hit or one RBI.  Seniors Matt Todd, Jake Meyerson and Dan Warren each had two hits and two runs scored while freshman Aiden Finch clubbed two doubles and had two RBI.

In game two, RPI got on the board early with two in the top of the 1st, but Rochester responded right away with three runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the 2nd to pull ahead 4-2 after two.

With the score 4-3, host RPI exploded for six runs in the seventh to break away.  UR would score two in the bottom of the inning, but the Engineers would add an insurance run in the 8th to get to the 10-6 score.

Meyerson had another strong game, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI.  Todd ripped two doubles and scored two runs while Finch drove in three runs, making his total five on the day.

On the mound, UR's starter was Luke Meyerson who scattered eight hits and three runs over four innings.  RPI was able to get to the Yellowjacket bullpen as seven runs were scored in the later stages of the contest.

The Yellowjackets return to action on Wednesday with a road contest at St. John Fisher College with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm.
