SANFORD, FL – The University of Rochester baseball team lost a pitchers duel to Washington-St. Louis on day two of the UAA Championship, falling 1-0 on Monday afternoon.
Â
The loss moves Rochester to 1-1 on the season and in UAA play while the Bears improve to 7-3 and 1-1 in the UAA with the victory.
Â
Washington's Bill Heisler tossed eight plus strong innings for the Bears, allowing just two UR hits and three walks while striking out six. Matt Clohisy picked up the save escaping a leadoff walk in the final frame.
Â
Rochester's Evan Janifer looked good in his first action of the spring as well, throwing six innings, allowing eight hits and was the tough luck loser with one run allowed, which was unearned. He also struck out six on the day. Freshman Andrew Klee tossed two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Â
Janifer was able to escape trouble in the bottom of the first inning, as Washington was able to load the bases with nobody out. The cleanup hitter then flied out to right and senior Jake Meyerson gunned down the runner at home trying to tag up, recording the double play. Janifer then got a ground out to end the threat.
Â
Two errors doomed the Yellowjackets in the fifth inning, allowing Washington to score the only run of the game. After getting the first two outs of the inning, Christian Santos reached on a bobbled grounder to second. Then Conor O'Hara singled to left putting two on with two out. The next batter Spencer Egly then reached on a UR throwing error, plating Santos for the lone run.
Â
In the ninth, UR's Matt Todd walked to leadoff the final inning, chasing Heisler from the game. The next batter Meyerson dropped down a sac bunt to move Todd up into scoring position. Nolan Schultz then lined a hard fly ball to left and Pete Carrier did the same to end the game.
Â
Lance Hamilton and Dan Warren picked up the two hits on the day for Rochester while Todd walked twice. UR was playing with a short turnaround from Sunday night UAA game to the opening game on Monday at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
Â
Rochester continues UAA Tournament play with a 2 pm game against Case Western Reserve on Tuesday.
