Dickerson Nets Two as UR Pulls Away, 4-1

FAUVER STADIUM – Claire Dickerson scored twice in a span of 3:30 early in the second half to help the University of Rochester pull away for a 4-1 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon.

Lauren Sharpe and Miranda Lakis had single goals for Rochester. Maya Haigis had two assists and Sayaka Abe had one assist.

Morgan Pothast scored the JHU goal on the final stroke of the game (70:00) from Kate McErlean. It developed from a penalty corner awarded in the last 10 seconds.

The victory boosted Rochester's record to 5-0. The Yelllowjackets were ranked #18 in the pre-season poll of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Johns Hopkins is 2-1. The Blue Jays defeated Washington & Lee at home on September 2 and edged St. John Fisher College, 2-1, in Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

In goal, Gabrielle Cantley played the first 35 minutes for Rochester. She made one save. Kiran Sundaram had three saves and one goal allowed in 35 minutes in the second half. Rochester's Alexis Wood had two defensive saves for Rochester. Greta Helvie made four saves for Johns Hopkins.

Rochester opened the scoring at 10:07. Lakis ran 20 yards down the middle, weaving around defenders. Just inside the circle, she lined the ball to the low left corner. The Yellowjackets added a second goal at 26:00. Tiffany White's penalty corner went to Sayaka Abe at the head of the circle. She passed to Lakis who lifted a high ball to the right side and Sharpe swatted it in.

JHU had two good chances in the first half, both tied to penalty corners. Just minutes after the first goal, Clare Kavanagh's penalty corner found McErlean at the top of the circle. Her shot was saved to the left side by Cantley. With less than five minutes left in the period, the Kavanagh to McErlean combination nearly clicked again. McErlean passed the PC inside where Pothas shot for the low right corner, but Wood was there to push it away.

At 38:13, Dickerson scored her first goal of the afternoon. Callie Fisher tried a backhand from left wing. Haigis had her back to the goal and her stick out. She deflected the ball to Dickerson who scored to the low left corner.

Abe created the last UR goal at 41:47. She cut in alone on right wing and from six yards, fired. Dickerson turned it into the cage.

JHU made a couple of late game flurries towards the Rochester goal. Sundaram had to bat down a lifted ball by Francesca Cali off another Blue Jay PC with 7:30 to play. Just before time expired, Kavanagh played a PC out to McErlean who shot and Pothast was there to touch the ball into the net.
