ONEONTA, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team allowed an early goal to host SUNY Oneonta, but rallied for a 3-1 victory and improved to 7-0 on the season.
Â
Overall, the Yellowjackets, ranked #13 in NCAA Division III, just surrendered two shots for the Red Dragons (1-5), one of which was Casey Stata's goal in the 6th minute of the game.
Â
Rochester was able to respond, pulling even at 9:42 when freshman
Amanda Guido scored for the second straight game, finding the cage off a pass from teammate
Sayaka Abe. Abe dribbled into the arc and passed to an open Guido for the equalizer.
Â
Less than five minutes later, UR's
Maya Haigis, another first year player, pulled the Yellowjackets in front 2-1 with a goal off a penalty corner. The score, Haigis' third of the season came from 14 yards out, off a pass from the top of the circle by
Callie Fisher.
Â
At the break, it was 2-1 UR, also holding an 8-1 shot advantage and 6-2 edge in penalty corners. Rochester's starting keeper
Gabrielle Cantley did not make a save, but picked up her fourth win of the year.
Â
In the second half, it was nearly all UR, limiting the Red Dragons to one shot, which was not on goal, and one penalty corner. Relief keeper
Kiran Sundaram did not make a save either.
Â
Fisher then made the score 3-1 Rochester with a tally in the 54th minute, her team leading fourth of the season and 32nd of her career. The third goal was also set up by Abe, who has seven assists in seven games this year for Rochester. Abe's shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Fisher into the cage.
Â
The 7-0 start for Rochester is the third best streak to begin a season in school history, trailing only the 2014 team that began the year 11-0 and the 2012 squad which started 8-0.
Â
The Yellowjackets now have a week off before opening up Liberty League conference play at Union College in Schenectady on Sept. 24 at 3 pm.
