Rochester Tops Union 2-0 In Liberty League Opener

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Rochester field hockey team kept its unbeaten streak to start the season alive, defeating Union College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.

UR (8-0, 1-0 Liberty League) got two goals from senior attacker Callie Fisher and the defense only surrendered three shots to the Dutchwomen (3-4, 0-1 Liberty League).

The Yellowjacket offense applied pressure from the opening whistle and eventually outshot Union by a 27-3 margin, with 16 of those shots hitting the target.  Rochester also dominated in penalty corners, earning 12 to Union's one in the contest.

In the first half, Union's one penalty corner did yield one of two shots on goal for the Dutchwomen, coming from Charlotte Leyland, but Rochester's goalkeeper Gabrielle Cantley made the save.  Cantley finished with two saves in the game.  In the second half, junior classmate Kiran Sundaram took over and was not need to make a save.

Fisher then opened the scoring at the 26 minute mark of the opening period.  She scorer her fifth goal of the year blasting a shot from 12 yards out to the low right corner of the net, beating Union keeper Laura Aptowitz.

After halftime, Rochester would again control possession, peppering the Union defense with chance after chance in the crease, earning many corners and scoring opportunities but were unable to break through.

From the 57:40 mark through 59:11, Rochester embarked on an offensive assault, leading to seven shots, three of which were saved by Aptowitz while two others were cleared off the goal line by Lindsay Barson for defensive saves.  All of the attempts were from in close and excellent chances for UR to increase its lead.

Fisher was finally able to add an insurance goal in the 66th minute, backhanding a shot to the upper right side of the net, going pad side on Aptowitz.  Senior Sayaka Abe set up the play with a steal and dribble into the circle, dumping it in front to Fisher who finished off her second score of the contest.

The two goals move the senior into seventh all-time in Rochester history with 34 in her career, also bumping her into a tie for seventh on the all-time points list with 79 points.

Union's best chance of the second half came in the 43rd minute when a long pass set up a Union player on a breakaway, but she missed the shot attempt and turned the ball over back to UR.  Overall, Aptowitz finished with 12 saves in the contest for Union.

Rochester's next game is scheduled for Wednesday at Nazareth College, starting at 7 pm.
