PITTSFORD, NY – The #9 ranked University of Rochester field hockey team showed why it is one of the top teams in Division III, earning a convincing 3-0 win over Nazareth College on Wednesday evening.
Â
Rochester with the win improves to 9-0 on the year, the second best start to a season in school history while the Golden Flyers drop to 1-9 on the season.
Â
The Yellowjackets, fresh off earning their highest ever ranking in the Division III coaches poll on Tuesday, combined to outshoot Nazareth 49-1 and earned all 24 penalty corners in the contest.
Â
Denny scored her first goal of the year.
Nazareth goalkeeper Kimber Nourse was forced to make a Nazareth single-game record 28 saves in the loss while the Yellowjacket goalkeepers,
Gabrielle Cantley and
Kiran Sundaram only made one save, going to Sundaram who played the second half.
Â
Rochester took the lead at the 10:48 mark of the 1st half, coming off the stick of
Jennifer Lee. The tally was the sophomores second goal of the season and came from in close to the cage.
Â
In the following three minutes, the Yellowjackets nearly made it 2-0, twice hitting the post, first by freshman
Amanda Guido and then by classmate Colleen Maille.
Â
UR then was able to find the back of the cage at 19:22 when junior
Samantha Dow recorded her third goal of the season, again winning a battle in front, slamming a loose ball home.
Â
Just before halftime, a penalty corner led to UR's third goal of the game.Â
Olivia Denny, who took the initial corner, was able to get the ball back off a pass from Maillie and tip the ball past Nourse for a 3-0 Yellowjacket lead.
Â
In the second half, Rochester kept the pressure up, adding to their tremendous shot total. But the Golden Flyers did venture into UR territory periodically, forcing Sundaram to make a save, with the shot coming from Kelsi Barnholt.
Â
The Yellowjackets continue their season on Saturday at 1 pm with a trip to SUNY New Paltz before hosting St. John Fisher at home next Tuesday at 5 pm.
