ITHACA, NY – In her first collegiate start, freshman goalkeeper
Gwen Haffenden stood up to the challenge of the nation's 18th-ranked team as Rochester dueled Ithaca College to a 2-2 double overtime tie in the third place game of the Upstate Collegiate Cup.
Â
Haffenden made seven saves and the Yellowjackets saved one ball on the line to stay level with the Bombers. Rochester is 0-3-3 overall. Ithaca, which lost to Cortland on Saturday in the tournament semifinals, is 4-1-1 after the tie.
Â
Paige Gloster provided the offensive punch Rochester needed. She scored both Yellowjacket goals – the first putting the visitors ahead, 1-0, and the second one tying the score eight minutes after Ithaca forged ahead, 1-0.
Â
Stacey DiGiorgio made seven saves like Heffenden, and her defense had to snuff out one chance deep in the area with her unable to get to the ball.
Â
Gloster put the Yellowjackets ahead, 1-0, at 21:54. She picked the ball up outside the area, dribbled past defenders in the box, and fired beyond DiGiorgio's reach.
Â
Shoshana Bedrosian got Ithaca even just before halftime (42:33). She took Megan Nash's pass across midfield and beat a defender inside the box. The hosts built a 2-1 lead at 55:42. Jocelyn Ravesi collected a Rochester giveaway and kicked it into the corner of the net.
Â
Rochester got even with a set piece.
Dani Aceves put a corner kick into the area and Gloster headed it home at 66:52.
