Houghton-UR Battle to Scoreless Draw

HOUGHTON, NY – Freshman goalkeeper Gwen Haffenden made six saves for her first career shutout as the University of Rochester battled Houghton College to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night at Burke Field.

The draw is UR's second straight and moves the Yellowjackets to 0-3-4 on the season while Houghton moves to 4-1-2 in 2016.

The Highlanders were the first to press the attack with an early first half effort from Nikki Garns missing wide as she raced into the Yellowjacket defense around the 10 minute mark.

UR best chance of the first half came in the dying stages of the period when a serve from freshman Jorie Freitag found sophomore Kerri Eden with an open header inside of six yards.  The attempt just missed the mark and the teams went into halftime level, with both sides showing their defensive resolve and effort.

The second half would see the 'Jackets pick up where the left off carrying momentum in the game.  UR was able to generate three corners in the closing ten minutes, but the Highlander defense stood tall, keeping the Yellowjackets off the board.  That spurt included a shot by senior Kim Stagg that was saved by Houghton goalkeeper Rachael Fortney with 60 seconds remaining in regulation.

The overtime continued to display clever attacks from both teams that were met with an even more determined resolve to keep their opponent off the scoreboard.

Overall in the contest, Rochester held a 13-12 shot advantage with each side taking five corner kicks.  Fortney made seven saves for the Highlanders.

The Yellowjackets will next battle Nazareth at Fauver Stadium on Tuesday, September 27th at 7 pm.
