ALFRED, NY – Sophomore
Bryce Ikeda broke a scoreless draw with a goal in the 67th minute as the #7 ranked Rochester men's soccer team defeated Alfred University 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Yunevich Stadium.
Â
Ikeda's goal came after a corner kick from teammate
Geoffrey Rouin and was the sophomore's second goal of the year. His other score came against RIT and was also the game-winner, with that goal coming in overtime of the Hillside Community Shield match.
Â
Overall, the stat sheet in the contest was pretty even, with both UR (7-0-1) and Alfred taking seven apiece. The host Saxons (6-2-1) edged out UR in corners 5-3.
Â
In the opening minutes, UR's
Lasha Alkhazishvili came up from his defensive position to fire a shot on the Alfred net, only to see goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez make the save.
Â
Another Rochester defender,
Tanner Chester did the same in the 25th minute, attempting a shot on goal, but Gutierrez turned that one away as well, keeping the match scoreless. The Alfred keeper ended the game with three saves.
Â
Alfred was able put one on net in the 35th minute of the first half, but Rochester sophomore keeper
Patrick Conway saved the ball away, leading to a Saxon corner kick which was cleared by the defense.
Â
In the second half, Alfred got off only two shots, both coming within the first six minutes. At 45:55, Alfred's Richard Lander sent a ball wide. Then at 50:53, Lander again took the shot, this time it was on net, but Conway made his second save to preserve the shutout.
Â
Rochester returns home on Saturday and will open UAA conference play with a contest against #9 ranked Washington-St. Louis.
