Freshmen Help Rally UR Past #12 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Two freshmen scored second half goals as the #18 University of Rochester field hockey team rallied for a 2-1 victory over #12 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.

First year players Maya Haigis and Emma Schlechter scored in the second half and junior goalkeeper Kiran Sundaram made three saves in the final 35 minutes, earning the victory for UR (2-0).

Mary Washington (1-1) got the scoring started in the 26th minute when Christine Loehr chipped in a ball from the front of the goal, past UR starting keeper Gabrielle Cantley.  The goal came seconds after Cantley stopped a shot from the Eagles' Lexie Dixson.  UR's junior starter made three saves in her action.

The first half saw UMW hold a 7-2 edge in shots.

In the second half, UR got off to a quick start, earning a penalty corner in the third minute after the break.  That is when Haigis scored the equalizer, deflecting in a redirected hit from teammate Olivia Denny, slipping the ball by Mary Washington goalie Jessica Cavolt.

The game winner was then scored by Schlechter in the 61st minute, redirecting a shot from teammate Samantha Dow.  Following the go-ahead goal, UR's defense clamped down and didn't allow a UWM shot the rest of the way.

Mary Washington ended up finishing the contest with a 10-8 shot advantage while UR held an edge in penalty corners, 7-5.

UR is right back in action on Sunday, facing off with St. Mary's College of Maryland, with the game being played at Mary Washington's Battleground Turf Field at 3 pm.
