UR Earns 0-0 Double OT Tie With Montclair St.

FAUVER STADIUM – Rochester (0-0-2) withstood a surge by Montclair State University (1-0-1) in the second half and wound up with a 0-0 double overtime tie in the 2016 Women's Soccer Flower City Classic.

Montclair State earned a win (1-0 over Union on Friday) and a tie in the tournament. The Red Hawks finished tied for the title with SUNY Geneseo. Each team had four points. Geneseo tied Rochester 0-0 in regulation (OT was not played) on Friday. In Saturday's first game, Geneseo defeated Union, 3-0. The Knights won the Classic's Championship Trophy on a tiebreaker of goal difference.

The Classic Most Valuable Player was Erin O'Connor of SUNY Geneseo. She had the gamewinning goal vs. Union (Geneseo's first goal). The Best Offensive Player was Jennie Hornstra of Montclair State. She initiated most of MSU's dangerous attacks. The Best Defensive Player was Rochester goalkeeper Samantha Hlavac. She made four saves to get her first full shutout. Hlavac played 48:05 in Friday's 1-1 tie with Geneseo. She did not allow a goal in her playing time over the weekend.

Rochester finished third in the tournament with two points (two ties). Union College finished fourth.

Scoring opportunities were thin in the first half, although Montclair nearly broke on the scoreboard in the sixth minute. Hornstra raced down the right sideline and cut towards the penalty area. Hlavac rushed off the line to cut down the angle. Hornstra lined it past her, but it was just wide of the left post.

Rochester had two opportunities in the first half – within three minutes of each other. Midway through the period, McKenzie Runyan ran from left to right, angling towards the top of the penalty area as the defense parted. She fired from the penalty arc, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Jorie Freitag got through the MSU defense on the right flank. She dribbled into the box and from a tough angle, rolled a shot past the left post.

The Red Hawks picked up the pace in the second half. Tyler Madison fired wide left from high in the box early in the second half. With 10 minutes gone, a Montclair corner kick came into the box where a player stepped over it. The ball rolled to Deanna Rotella. Her shot, ticketed for the low left corner, was saved by a diving Hlavac.

Hornstra's shot off a corner kick in the 67th minute was saved at the low right post by Hlavac. With the clock approaching two minutes left, Hornstra centered the ball but Madison headed the service wide left.

Rochester produced some scoring chances in the first OT period. A scramble in the goalmouth eventually found Kim Stagg with the ball 10 yards off the line outside the right post. Her shot for the opposite corner went through a tangle of bodies and was just wide of goal.
