Volleyball Splits Opening Two Matches At Cortland

The University of Rochester volleyball team opened its season with a split between two matches on Friday evening at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Invitational.
 
The Yellowjackets (1-1), fell to host Cortland 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-27, 16-25) before rebounding with a 3-0 win over Misericordia in the night cap (25-11, 28-26, 25-13).
 
In the opener, UR was led by freshman Kate Korslund and junior Shira Katz who each pounded out 13 kills.  Sophomore Elizabeth Thomas added six kills and three while senior Aimee Kohler had 38 assists, 15 digs and three kills.  Adding to the stats were seniors Meghan Connor and Nina Baek who chipped in 27 and 20 digs respectively.
 
For Cortland (2-0), Courtney Silberer led the way with 16 kills while Janine Patora had 13 kills and 22 digs in the Red Dragon win.
 
Pacing Rochester in its second match of the day was sophomore transfer Clara Martinez who had eight kills and four blocks.  Korslund added six kills and three digs while Katz, Thomas and Alexandra Goldman each chipped in three kills.  Kohler had 11 assists and five digs while Connor added 14 digs.
 
In the win, UR recorded 17 service aces, the second most in a single match in school history.  Sophomores Courtney Vidovich and Audrey Goldfarb each had four, Connor recorded three and Kohler had two.
 
The Yellowjackets take to the court again on Saturday with matches against Coast Guard (1:30 pm) and Fredonia State (4 pm), closing out play at Cortland.
