UR Lets Early Lead Get Away Versus 10th Ranked Cortland

Rochester played their third game in two days on Wednesday night in Lexington, South Carolina. After dropping their first two games of the spring break trip, the Yellowjackets matched up with the tenth ranked Cortland Red Dragons. UR kept it close early but Cortland proved to be too much, pulling away to secure a 7-2 victory.

Senior SS Tyler Schmidt drove in Rochester's lone two runs on the evening. After Cortland went up 1-0 in the top of the first, Schmidt had a double in the bottom of first inning then came back in the second with two runners on and lined a single to left field scoring Aaron Craig and Corey Ziring and giving Rochester a 2-1 lead. The Yellowjacket offense went stagnant after that, being shutout for the remainder of the contest while the Cortland offense was just getting started.

Cortland came back with two more runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. The Red Dragons tacked on one more in the fourth on a Colin BeVard RBI single up the middle. Cortland then extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with runs from Wyatt Meyers and Matthew Personius and relied on their pitching staff to do the rest.

Schmidt was 2-4 on the day with two RBI's and a walk for the Yellowjackets. Catcher David Rieth was 2-4 with a walk while Ziring was 2-4 with a run scored and Aiden Finch went 2-5 on the day. Craig went 1-3 with a run scored for Rochester.

Luke Meyerson went seven innings for Rochester on the mound giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. Meyerson (0-1) struck out three and walked one. First-Year pitcher Hank Powers came on in relief late in the game with UR down by five runs. Powers allowed one walk but was able to complete a scoreless eighth inning.

Catcher Justin Teague led Cortland's offense going 2-3 on the day with two runs batted in. BeVard chipped in three hits for the Dragons with one RBI and two runs scored. Myers went 2-3 on the day with a run batted in, a run scored and one walk for Cortland.

Jason Martin got the win for Cortland going 3.2 innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Martin (1-0) struck out three and walked two. Sal Zafonte and Jarrod Bellinger tossed two scoreless innings each for Cortland. Bellinger struck out four hitters and gave up two hits. Noah Ernst came on for an inning and a third giving up no runs on two hits.

Cortland improves to 7-5 on the year while UR drops to 0-3. The Yellowjackets will be back in Lexington tomorrow to play Case Western Reserve University at 10 AM and will have a rematch with Roger Williams directly after at 1 PM.
