'Jackets Can't Overcome Big Inning in Loss to CWRU

Lexington, SC – UR was back on the diamond Thursday morning to take on Case Western Reserve University. Rochester had an early lead but a big inning by CWRU drove the Spartans to the 15-5 victory.
 
Jack Herman singled to left in the first, driving in two runs to give the Yellowjackets an early lead. CWRU evened things up in the second with an RBI Single by Noah Mehrle and a throwing error by Rochester. Aiden Finch helped UR take back the lead with an RBI double in the fourth, scoring Steve Pickering.
 
The bats got going in the fifth for the Spartans, plating eight runs to take a demanding 10-3 lead. CWRU's Samuel Neal tacked on two more runs in the seventh with a double to right center. Rochester added two runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit slightly, but were not able to put together a big inning to get back into contention.
 
Pickering led the UR offense going 3-3 with three runs scored. Finch stayed hot at the plate for the Yellowjackets going 2-3 on the day with a walk, a run scored and one RBI.  Herman went 1-3 with a walk and two RBI's while designated hitter Drew Bankovich went 2-3 with a run batted in.
 
Case Western Reserve had big offensive performances from multiple players on the day. Nate Glasser went 3-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Jake Ryan went 2-3 on the day, including a two RBI triple in the eighth to pad the lead for the Spartans. Mehrle had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs score while Casey McConihe went 3-4 with a walk and a run scored.
 
Jack Denzer (0-1) got the start for Rochester going 4.2 innings while giving up nine hits and 10 earned runs. Denzer struck out three and walked two in the loss.
 
Corey Brown (2-0) picked up the win for CWRU going seven innings and striking out three and allowing three runs on eight hits. Michael Pedota came on in the ninth for the Spartans retiring the Yellowjackets in order to end the game.
 
The loss drops U of R to 0-4 in the early season while CWRU improves to 8-1. Rochester will be forced to have a short term memory as they are back on the field for their second matchup with Roger Williams Today at 2:00 PM.
