TUCSON, AZ - Berry College took advantage of a five-run fourth inning and went on to a 6-2 softball victory over the University of Rochester in the Leadoff Classic in Tucson, AZ on Friday morning. In the second game, Linfield spun a no-hitter and posted a 12-0 victory over the Yellowjackets in a game ended after five innings on the mercy rule.
For Rochester,
Hannah Leahy scattered 10 hits over six innings in the opener. She allowed six runs, four earned, walked one, and struck out one. Berry's Madison Morgan held the Yellowjackets to three hits - two by
Alexis Pope - and two earned runs. She fanned seven, but walked eight. Rochester wasn't able to take advantage of the walks.
The Yellowjackets built a 2-0 lead. In the top of the first, Pope lined a two-out double that scored Marissa Ruso with the first run. In the top of the fourth, Ann marie Cortes hit a sac fly with the bases loaded. It brought home Pope with the second run. Michela Farmer moved to third and Jocelyn Blackshear advanced to second, but Morgan wiggled out of it with just the solo run allowed.
Berry scored five times in its half of the fourth. The key hit was a two-run double by Elisabeth Federici. In the fifth inning, Kaitlyn Seger hit a solo home run.
Liz Bourne took the loss in game two. The Yellowjackets are playing two games a day with most of the opponents - five of six - either ranked in the NFCA Poll or among others receiving votes. On Saturday, UR will play Illinois Wesleyan University and Christopher Newport University in the afternoon. The southwest trip concludes Sunday with games against defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan and Pacific University.
