Game Recap: Softball |

UR Scores 10 Runs Twice To Sweep Clarkson in Softball

The University of Rochester ran its softball winning streak to five games on Tuesday by sweeping Clarkson University in games that were monumentally different in terms of how they went.

The only possible similarities were that the Yellowjackets scored 10 runs in each game and both were walk-off victories. In the opener, Rochester scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 10-9 victory after they trailed, 9-6, heading into the final half inning. In game two, Rochester scored in five of the six innings and won, 10-2, in a game shorted by the run rule.

UR's two wins boost its record to 6-4 in the Liberty League, 13-14 overall. Rochester has won five in a row and six of the last seven – all in league play. The Yellowjackets currently sit third in the league race behind RPI (11-1) and Ithaca (9-3) as the season enters its final week.

Clarkson is 7-22-1 overall, 2-8 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights swept a doubleheader at RIT on Sunday (3-2 and 11-1). Those wins broke a six-game losing streak.

Game One:
The visitors jumped ahead early, scoring a run in the first, four in the second, and one in the third. That built a 6-1 lead through two and a half innings. It stood at 7-2 heading into the UR fifth

Summer Lancette had the big hit early for the Knights. CU had two aboard with two down and runners at the corners. Lancette singled to score Michele Winn and Hannah Bowen, then scored herself on Bridget Woolley's double to right center. Rochester's Hannah Leahy replaced Elizabeth Bourne. She hit Kat Plescow and Liz Caggiano followed with a single that scored Woolley for a 5-0 lead.

Leahy threw 11.1 innings to get 2 wins.

Leahy finished the game, going 5.1 innings and allowing four hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out one. She was the beneficiary of Rochester's offensive uprising in the late innings.

The Yellowjackets scratched out two runs in the fifth off Leah Allen to get within 7-4. Harleigh Kaczegowicz grounded a ball off Bowen's glove at short and it rolled all the way to the bench, allowing the hitter to reach second. Two batters later, Lydia Petricca homered to left field cutting the lead to 7-4.

Allen allowed eight hits in five innings, four runs (three earned), walked one, and fanned one. She was relieved by Maggie Stark. UR scored two unearned runs in the sixth off Stark. The Yellowjackets strung together four straight hits and took advantage of two miscues. UR had the bases loaded with one out down 7-6, when Alexis Pope hit a wicked liner down the first base line. Caggiano caught it and doubled the runner off first to end the inning.

Clarkson fed off the good fielding play. Sam Mennig singled and two batters later, Bowen homered over the left centerfield fence for a 9-6 lead.

Rochester answered one more. A single and a walk showed two on and two down. Kaczegowicz hit the first pitch she saw over the left center field fence to tie the game. Marissa Russo followed with a single to short and Petricca doubled down the left field line to win in.

Game Two:
Leahy went the distance in the game two walk-off run rule win. In six innings, she allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), and walked one. She threw 86 pitches after throwing 86 in the opener. She raised her record to 8-9.

Mennig pitched 5.2 innings for CU. She allowed 11 hits, 10 runs (seven earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.

UR's first three runs were unearned. Petricca's sac fly in the first scored Kaczegowicz who doubled and took third on a passed ball. In the second, Pope hit the first f her two doubles (she also homered in the fifth – a three-run shot). Leahy walked and stole second. Michaela Farmer's infield grounder was booted, allowing Pope to score. Leahy came home on a comebacker.

Clarkson got its runs with the longball. Bowen singled with one down in the third and Lancette homered to left center (3-2). The Knights threatened with two on in the fifth (down 4-2) and two more in the sixth (down 8-2), but couldn't break through.

UR sent eight to the plate in the fifth and scored four runs. Kaczegowicz walked, took second on a bunt single, moved to third on an error, and scored on Petricca's single to left. Two batters later, Pope finished her 3-3 game with a three-run HR down the left field line. The Yellowjackets added two more in the sixth to push the margin to eight.
