The 1958 University of Rochester football team had no peers on the gridiron and the squad has been recognized for that again.
Â
Rochester's team was inducted into the Frontier Field Walk of Fame on August 12 before the Rochester Red Wings took on the Charlotte Knights. The team was inducted in the category of "Chairman's Choice". Selections are made by the Frontier Field Walk of Fame Committee. The various categories include – but are not limited to -  amateur coaches, amateur sports, contributors and administrators, media, Olympians, Paralympians, and professional sports. There is also a category for Team of the Ages.
Â
Three Rochester teams – all of which won NCAA Division III National Championships – were inducted under the Team of the Ages category in previous years. The 1990 men's basketball team was inducted in 2010. The 1986 and 1987 women's soccer teams were inducted in 2017.
Â
Rochester's 1958 team shut out its first five opponents enroute to a final record of 8-0. The Yellowjackets outscored foes 257-19 for eight games, 157-0 over the first five. The seventh win of the season was a 46-6 victory in Fauver Stadium over Tufts University. It snapped a five-game losing streak against the Jumbos, the last three of which were one-sided.
Â
The UR defense allowed 1.9 yards per rush by opponents and a 30.5% pass completion rate. Foes averaged 71.4 yards rushing per game and 46.9 yards passing. Conversely, Rochester rushed for 248.1 yards per game (26 rushing TDs) and passed for 107.6 yards per game (12 passing TDs).
Â
Five members of the team – four players and a coach – were at the ceremony on August 12: George Hole, Jerry Winter, George Salemi, John Parrinello, and David Ocorr. He worked as an assistant coach and as the sports information director. Parrinello and Ocorr were inducted in earlier years as individuals: Ocorr as a contributor/administrator in 2000, Parrinello in 2013 under the amateur sports category.
Â
The Walk of Fame Class of 2018 inductees included several other people with ties to the University's athletic programs. Chris Battaglia and Lysle "Spike" Garnish were inducted as amateur coaches. Jill McCabe was inducted as in the contributor/administrator category.
Â
Battaglia was an assistant football coach and defensive coordinator for football in the early 1990s under Rich Parrinello. Garnish was an athletic trainer, coached baseball, football, and basketball. The University established the Spike Garnish Scholar Awards in his memory to honor the top 10 senior student-athletes each year. McCabe was an All-America soccer player and played on both national championship teams. The Garnish award was accepted by his grandchildren: Jenny Hall, Michelle Schuller, Chris Garnish, and Nancy Garnish.
Â
A special section of Frontier Field has been set aside for the Walk of Fame. Every inductee has a brick with their name on it and the brick is placed in that area.
