Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rochester Edges RIT, 2-1, to Retain the Community Shield

Anurag Dwivedi did what midfielders are expected to do – he made plays at both ends of the field in the last 21 minutes as Rochester edged RIT, 2-1, in a evenly contested men's soccer match at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Yellowjackets improved their record to 4-0. RIT is 3-1. A 3-0 start heading into this one moved Rochester up three spots in the Division III poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches. UR is #6.

Rochester retained possession of the Hillside Community Shield trophy. This competition started in 2011 between the institutions. The Yellowjackets have six wins and a tie in the seven games. Five of the six decisions are one goal affairs plus the 1-1 tie in 2013.

Bryce Ikeda
Ikeda's CK led to the gamewinning goal.
Dwivedi scored what turned out to be the gamewinner and nine minutes later, he headed away a potential game-tying goal. The win was not secured until Rochester goalkeeper Patrick Conway pulled down a header by Jared Short which was ticketed for the middle of the net, just under the crossbar. That came with 12 seconds remaining and the Yellowjackets were able to run out the clock.

RIT's most dangerous player was midfielder Nick Simone. A minute into the game, his hard liner was touched just wide by Conway for a corner kick. A miss on the tip and it would have landed in the top right corner. With five minutes left in the first half, Simone crossed the ball from left wing into the center of the box and Conway had to punch the shot clear from the top of the box.

A combination of Simone and Adam Bem were denied by both Conway and the woodwork in the 44th minute. On a counterattack, Simone dribbled along the endline before playing it to the back post where Bem tried to volley. Conway saved the rising shot. It struck the underside of the crossbar and then the inside of the left post before the Yellowjackets could hurriedly scramble it away.

Rochester broke onto the scoreboard with the second half barely five minutes old. Nik Angyal ran down the right side and lined a low ball through the middle of the RIT penalty area. Mitch Volis ran in from left wing and hit a hard liner just inside the right post, beyond the reach of RIT goalkeeper Will Sokol (five saves).

RIT evened it nine minutes later. Angyal and Ryan Gray tangled for a loose ball in the box. Gray went down and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Simone drove it straight into the middle of the net, tying the score.

UR laid siege to the RIT goal over a five-minute period. The Yellowjackets kept the pressure on, gaining throw-ins deep in their offensive third, and corner kicks. Sokol made two terrific saves in this surge. With less than 25 minutes to play, UR's Zach Lawlor volleyed from just outside the area straight on and Sokol leapt to save just outside his crease. A minute later, Bryce Ikeda's corner kick from the left landed at the foot of Angyal. He tried a half-volley for the low right corner but Sokol was there, sliding across the goalmouth to kick the ball over the endline for another corner kick.

The gamewinning goal came off a corner kick by Ikeda in the 69th minute. With the goalmouth packed with both white and black shirts, his serve off the corner landed in the middle. Dwivedi somehow managed to head the ball down and it found a path between all the legs to nestle in the low left corner.

With 12 minutes left, Dwivedi used his head again, this time after Simone rampaged down the middle and let fly at the top of the area. Dwivedi headed the shot laterally to his defense which cleared it.
