Rochester extended its men's soccer record to 5-0 with a 2-0 victory over Buffalo State College. To earn the win, the Yellowjackets had to withstand serious pressure from the Bengals, particularly in the last 30 minutes.
Â
Josh Cooley scored 18:26 into the first half and
Bryce Ikeda doubled the lead by converting a penalty kick at 58:35.
Â
The loss was the first of the season for BSC. Buffalo State was 5-0 coming in (one match was cancelled) and had outscored opponents 15-1. That included a 3-0 win at D'Youville College on Friday afternoon.
Â
Rochester came in with a 4-0 record, seven goals scored and two allowed. Rochester is ranked #6 in the current poll of the Division III coaches (USC). UR is ranked first in the East Region poll by the same group. Buffalo State, which had played just two matches at the time of the poll, is #4 regionally.
Â
Lots of scoring chances, but very few shots on goal. The teams combined for 10 shots on goal, five each way. UR goalkeeper
Patrick Conway made five saves – three tough ones in a span of three minutes after the Ikeda penalty kick made it 2-0. BSC's Andreas Queen had three saves. His defenders excelled in keeping UR from good shooting space in the box.
Â
The visitors came close to scoring 15 minutes into the match. Ali Shawish collected a long ball from right wing and shot. The defense cleared it but Theo Pencic stole the c learance and from the left side of the box, put a shot across the front of the goalmouth and just past the right post.
Â
UR broke the 0-0 deadlock before 20 minutes were gone.
Mitch Volis centered the ball right left wing. It bounced off feet from both sides just outside the crease before Cooley was able to poke it through the crowd and into the net.
Â
Ikeda caused the penalty kick, then coverted it. His long throwin from left wing to the end line shy of the near post was handled by a Bengal defender. He stepped to the spot and coverted for his first goal of the season.
Â
Shawish was in the middle of three terrific scoring chances for the guests in the next three minutes. Zakaria Shaibi centered it from left wing to Shawish at the right post. His header was saved by a diving Conway. A minute later, he was back at it. He played a free kick into the middle where Pa Lu's header was saved low by Conway. With 24:30 to go, Shawish hit a long, high ball from the left side to the top right corner. Conway jumped and caught it at the juncture of the right post and crossbar.
