Rochester began a hefty stretch of games – three scheduled in a four-day period – with a 4-0 victory over the College at Brockport on Wednesday evening. UR improved its record to 5-0 overall while Brockport lost its third straight after an opening-day victory over Keuka College.
Â
The impending arrival of Hurricane Florence forced the Yellowjackets to make a schedule change. Rochester will play – as scheduled – at Keuka College on Friday. UR was originally scheduled to play Mary Washington at the national training center in Spooky Nook, Pennsylvania on Sunday morning. UMW closed due to storm warnings and the match had to be canceled. The Yellowjackets managed to schedule a game against Juniata College on Saturday at 2 p.m. That created the three-matches-in-four-days scenario.
Â
First-year
Amanda Strenk scored the first three Yellowjacket goals. Senior
Nancy Bansbach completed the scoring with her sixth of the year. Strenk has five tallies with the hat trick.
Â
Brockport goalkeeper Adriana DeDie made 13 saves – all coming in the first half. She had eight stops in the opening 16 minutes when Rochester poured 12 shots into the Brockport cage. Emily Hall of the Golden Eagles had a defensive save in that surge.
Â
Bansbach assisted on the opening goal, scored by Strenk with 21:26 elapsed. She slid the ball over from the middle to the left where Strenk was four yards off the endline. She backhanded it into the low right corner.
Â
The lead nearly doubled with just over nine minutes to play. Rochester was awarded a penalty stroke. DeDie came up big for Brockport, knocking the ball away with her blocker.
Â
UR pushed home a second goal four minutes before halftime. Strenk made a weaving run through the circle down left wing, cut towards the net, and lined the ball under DeDie for a 2-0 lead.
Â
She completed the three-goal night by scoring on a rebound from six yards out early in the second half. Rochester completed the scoring 10 minutes into the second half. A long shot was taken outside the circle. Bansbach collected it and lined it into the net from the top of the circle with teammates lying in wait at the back post.
Â
Notes: UR held a 26-0 margin in shots, 17-0 on goal. The Yellowjackets had 17 penalty corners, 10 in the second half. UR goalkeeper
Kate Kujawa was not required to make a save. The shutout was her third in a row.
