BUFFALO, N.Y. - Led by
Clara Martinez and
Kate Korslund, the University of Rochester ran its volleyball record to 10-0 with a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State College in the first match of a two-day affair in the Queen City. The Yellowjackets hit .229 as a team.
The host Bengals (3-8) took the first set, 23-25. Rochester roared back, evening the match with a 25-9 win in the second set, then posting consecutive 25-18 victories to capture the win. In the match-sealing fourth set, Rochester trailed 9-14 before calling timeout and refocusing. UR ended the set on a 16-4 burst to get the third team point.
Korslund had 14 kills and hit .444 on the night. Martinez had 15 kills and hit .424. Korslund added one solo block. Martinez chipped in four digs. Tamara Shaw had six kills and two digs.
Beth Ghyzel had 43 assists, three kills, and eight digs.
Lauren Lopez and
Lydia Barnard had seven digs.
Sara Apanavicius led the UR defenders with 15 digs.
Allie DeRubertis had eight kills and seven digs.
For Buffalo State, Brooke Latour had 11 kills and Eimile O'Brien had six kills.
Rochester will play Allegheny College on Saturday morning, then face Capital University of Ohio in the early afternoon.
