PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The transition attack – it is one of the basics in sports, turning from defense to offense in a matter of seconds. Coaches talk about it constantly, stressing the importance and how it can turn a game around.
That's what happened on Sunday afternoon at St. John Fisher's Growney Stadium. The University of Rochester men's soccer team made a sound defensive play, broke out on attack and within 30 seconds, had a 1-0 lead.
UR scored a second goal with less than seven minutes to play to post a 2-0 victory. Rochester, which defeated RPI, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday at Fauver Stadium, is 2-0. The Yellowjackets are ranked #9 in the pre-season poll of the United Soccer Coaches. St. John Fisher is 0-2.
Mitch Volis scored both goals for the Yellowjackets. Volis has figured in all three Rochester goals this season. He set up the 2nd-OT gamewinner on Friday night (scored by
Josh Cooley), then was the man in the right spot against the Cardinals on Sunday.
The game-turning sequence came in the 59th minute. Rochester goalkeeper
Patrick Conway leaped to pull down a shot from Joe Balls on right wing. Conway made the catch with a Fisher attacker just a short distance away from him, ready to pounce on a dropped ball.
Aspenleiter set up the clinching goal.
Instead, Conway distributed the ball to his backs and they found
Aidan Miller running down the right touchline. Miller carried the ball a good distance into Fisher's defensive third before squaring a pass into the middle of the area. It came to Volis, slightly to the left of the penalty spot and he quickly fired it into the low right corner for a 1-0 lead.
He made it 2-0 in the 84th minute.
Ryan Aspenleiter took it down the right touchline and crossed it into the middle where Volis was wide open. He had a chance to settle it, pick his spot, and drive the second goal beyond the reach of Fisher goalkeeper James Catalfamo.
The Yellowjackets held a 21-8 advantage in shots, 11-2 in shots on goal. Rochester earned seven corner kicks while conceding two. Conway finished with two saves. Catalfamo had nine.
Both teams are idle until Saturday. Fisher heads for Baltimore to take on Drew University in a tournament. Rochester is home Saturday night against Hobart College (7 pm kickoff).
