University of Rochester senior
Ryan Aspenleiter connected on parts of both goals as the Yellowjacket men's soccer team defeated visiting Hobart College 2-1 on Saturday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester moves to 3-0 on the young season while Hobart slips to 1-1-1 with the loss.
Aspenleiter scored the game winner in the 84th minute, putting Rochester ahead 2-0 after a
Josh Cooley score in the 70th minute. Hobart's goal came off the foot of Pete Critchlow with under 90 seconds on the clock.
The opening 30 minutes of the first half were rather pedestrian in nature as both teams were feeling each other out, with UR's best chance coming from
Cristian Baltier in the 25th minute. Cooley slipped a pass through the defense and Baltier's shot from the left wing 12 yards out was handled easily by Statesmen keeper Alec Kaminer.
Cooley opened the scoring.
Hobart's most productive offensive pressure came in the 41st minute when a hard shot from outside the box by August Martini was deflected away for a corner. On the ensuing corner, Martini curled the cross into a dangerous spot in the crease, but the Yellowjacket defense headed it away to safety.
To close the half,
Simon Galviz won a one-on-one battle with a Hobart defender along the right side and sent a shot in on goal, which was saved by Kaminer. The rebound came out to
Zach Lawlor, but he couldn't control the follow up attempt as it went wide. At the break, UR led 6-3 in shots, with Kaminer making all five of his saves before intermission.
The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with neither team generating good chances throughout the opening 20 minutes.
At 66:50, the Statesmen's Sam Farman had an in-close header chance at the back post off a corner kick which was saved away by UR goalie
Patrick Conway. Conway finished the night with two saves.
Less than three minutes later, Cooley put UR on the board with a right footed volley from 15 yards out to the low left corner of the net. Aspenleiter picked up an assist on the play sending the long pass in from the right sideline.
In the 80th minute, Hobart's Kyle Patrick slid a nice through ball in between multiple defenders to his teammate Nate Cary along the left wing, but his 10 yard shot was blocked by the defense away for a corner.
At 83:55, Aspenleiter made it 2-0 Yellowjackets.
Mitch Volis started the play, dribbling in deep along the left side. He chipped a pass back to
Bryce Ikeda who drew Kaminer off his line, avoided a defender and sent a cross to a sliding Aspenleiter for a sliding tap-in goal at the back post.
Hobart's tally came with 85 seconds left in the game. After a long throw in, Critchlow gained possession of a loose ball after multiple headers and chipped his shot through traffic in front at the edge of the crease for his first goal of the year.
The Yellowjackets return to action on Tuesday evening, hosting RIT in the Hillside Community Shield match. Hobart's next contest is its home opener on Thursday against SUNY Potsdam.
