SELINSGROVE, PA - Host Susquehanna University snapped Rochester's season-opening 12-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory over the Yellowjackets on Friday night. The River Hawks won by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 20-16. Susquehanna is 7-6. Rochester is 12-1.
This was the opening night of SU's Hampton Inn River Hawk Classic. In the other match Friday, Messiah College defeated Frostburg State, 3-0. Rochester will play both of those schools on Saturday.
Rochester built its early season success on sound hitting, good defense, and being opportunistic. Susquehanna had the upper hand in attacks. The River Hawks hit .176 in game one, .257 in game two, and .323 in game three. Rochester's first game was its best in terms of attack percentage (.219). In game two, UR hit .176. In game three, the Yellowjackets could only muster four kills and hit .111.
Alara Kocak had nine kills and four digs.
Clara Martinez had six kills, three block assists, and four digs.
Allie DeRubertis had five kills, one service ace, and two block assists.
Beth Ghyzel contributed three kills, 18 assists, and five digs.
Megan Hauer led UR with 10 digs.
Sara Apanavicius had nine.
In game one, Rochester chopped a Susquehanna lead down to 18-20 after DeRubertis and Martinez combined on a block assist. Susquehanna won five of the last six points to take the game. In the second game, UR trailed by five before Kocak collected two kills and a River Hawks' service error got the Yellowjackets within 20-25. SU converted back to back kills to take a 2-0 lead in games. In the third game, the River Hawks opened big leads of 8-1 and 15-6 before sealing the victory.
