ALFRED, N.Y. - The University of Rochester women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to five matches with a 1-0 victory at Alfred University on Saturday evening. UR improved to 5-1-1 overall while Alfred lost for only the second time in eight matches this year (6-2).
Rochester used a first half goal - scored on a penalty kick - to take the 1-0 lead and then had some spirited defending and good offensive pressure - particularly in the second half to emerge with the win.
The penalty was awarded at 28:33 after Alfred was whistled for a hand ball in the area.
Shayna Levy stepped to the spot and calmly converted the spot kick. It is her first goal this season and the second of her career.
Emma Schecter picked up the shutout for Rochester in goal. She was not required to make a save. She made one of her best plays in the 85th minute. Alfred struck a free kick straight down the field. Rochester tried to head it away, but the attempted clearance deflected towards the defensive left of Schecter's goal and was targeted to go over the end line for a corner kick. Schecter raced off the line, managed to get to the ball before it was out of touch, and kicked it down the left touchline, keeping it in play for her teammates to knock farther downfield.
UR had a couple of good chances to extend the lead. With 16 minutes left,
Carolyn Richards cut into the box, worked herself open from eight yards away, but fired just past the left post. With nine minutes left,
Julie Hyatt played a long free kick from midfield ahead to
Kerri Eden. She tried to backhead it but Makenzie Cashmer made the save.
Rochester returns to Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday to host Nazareth College at 7 pm.
