Rochester Loses to Emory & Carnegie Mellon at UAA Round Robin

WALTHAM, MA – Rochester hit the ball well against seventh-ranked Emory University, but then struggled with attack accuracy in its second match against Carnegie Mellon University.
 
The result is that the Yellowjackets lost, 3-0, to both Emory and CMU in the first UAA Volleyball Round Robin this fall. UR has one match left in this grouping. The Yellowjackets will face NYU on Sunday morning. In two weeks' time, UR goes to Carnegie Mellon for the second round robin to face Brandeis, Washington, Chicago, and Case Western Reserve.
 
These UAA round robins establish the seedings for the UAA Championships. That tournament will be hosted by Rochester on November 2 &3. The UAA champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs which begin the following week.
 
Megan McHugh
McHugh had five block assists.
Emory defeated Rochester, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-18. The Eagles were 9-3 after the victory. Carnegie Mellon won, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17. The Tartans improved to 13-5 overall. Both clubs are 2-0 in the UAA.
 
Against Emory, Rochester hit .273 in the opening set, .263 in set two, and .120 in the third set. Allie DeRubertis had the best hitting percentage among the kill leaders. She hit .333 with 9 kills, 2 errors, and 21 attacks. Alara Kocak had eight kills. Hope Havenhill had four kills, and Megan McHugh had three.
 
Courtney Vidovich and Sara Apanavicius were the dig leaders with 10 apiece. Kocak had five digs, Beth Ghyzel and Megan Hauer three each. Ghyzel led with 26 assists. Rochester had two block solos and eight block assists. Tamera Shaw had two solos and one assist. McHugh had two block assists.
 
In the CMU match, the Yellowjackets couldn't establish a consistent flow to the attack. Kocak was the kill leader with 10. DeRubertis had six and Vidovich had three. Kocak and Apanavicius had two aces, Vidovich and Elizabeth Thomas one apiece. The dig leaders were Kocak (15), Apanavicius (13), and Ghyzel (10). McHugh had three block assists, Ghyzel had two, and Vidovich one. UR did not have any solo blocks. Ghyzel had 22 assists.
