#6 Chicago Trips Up Rochester 2-0

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester men's soccer team ran into a tough and physical University of Chicago side on Sunday afternoon at Fauver Stadium, falling 2-0 to the 6th-ranked Maroons.

The loss is UR's second straight, and moves the Yellowjackets to 7-4 on the season and 0-2 in the UAA.  Chicago picks up its third straight shutout and improves to 6-1-4 in 2019 and is 2-0 and is tied for first in the conference.

It was a matchup of two teams who reached last years Division III Final Four in Greensboro, North Carolina, and turned into a physical battle throughout, with a total of 36 fouls called in the contest.  Neither team generated many scoring chances, with Chicago ending with an 11-6 edge in shot attempts, 5-4 with shots on frame.

The Chicago goals were scored by Sahil Modi off his own rebound in the 31st minute, and by Kameron Bloye in the 81st minute, coming off a 21 yard free kick.

Rochester's Hugh Curran made three saves, while Chicago's Aaron Katsimpalis stopped four shots.

UC's first look at a scoring chance came in early in the 9th minute when Bryce Millington send a high ball towards the crease looking for Kyle Ruark, but Curran leap in goal and snagged the cross before Ruark could connect.

A minute and a half later, Rochester earned a free kick just outside the box near the corner, earning a shot attempt after a carom back to Cristian Baltier, but the senior's low skidding shot was blocked.

At 10:05, Rochester's Zach Lawlor recorded the first shot on goal in the game, heading an attempt towards the top right corner of the net off a long throw in, but Kastimpalis was there for the save.

Chicago edged ahead at 30:51.  Bloye started the play with a shot from outside the box that was saved by Curran.  The UR goalie could not corral the ball completely though, letting Modi get to the rebound.  After Modi's first follow up was stopped, the second rebound shot found the back of the net for a 1-0 Chicago lead.

Rochester's best chance of the game came six minutes into the second half.  Tony Hypsher sent a cross in from the left sideline towards Aidan Miller at the edge of the crease.  With Katsimpalis trying to intercept the pass, Miller came towards the ball, sliding into open space, just sending his one-timer shot wide left of the net.

Just before the 70 minute mark, Bloye ripped a blast from 15 yards out after some nifty maneuvering around the Yellowjacket defense, but his shot flew just high of the crossbar for a goal kick.

In the 78th minute, Baltier had another opportunity to score after receiving a bounding ball near the corner of the box, but his curling shot towards the right post was saved.

The Maroons made it 2-0 at 80:09 when Bloye perfectly placed his free kick into the top left section of the net.

In the final minute, Rochester kept pushing forward, with Mouhammed Thiam sending a long pass from midfield to Tommy Nelson at the edge of the box.  Nelson headed the ball near the goal and saw Katsimpalis bobble it, but no UR players surrounded the loose ball, so Chicago was able to clear it away.
