Rochester goalkeeper
Emma Schechter was outstanding again. She made seven saves on 12 shots. Additionally, she came off the line when necessary, clearly reading the opportunity to do so.
Â
The defense was strong in front of her. The second half was 15 minutes old when the Tartans launched another transition attack. A cross from the left sideline found a shooter at the top of the penalty arc. She took two short dribbles to create shooting space. As she stuck the ball, a Rochester defender kicked it over the left sideline and nothing came of the followup throw-in.
Â
Midway through the second period, Schecter went high in the penalty area, a good 12 yards off the endline to catch a cross from the right wing with an opponent running down the left slot awaiting the service.
Â
Her instincts paid off again eight minutes later. CMU earned a corner kick from the left side of goal. It was struck low to the near post and produced a mad scramble of feet and jostling inside the crease until Schecter dove on the ball and covered up.
Â
Rochester was able to strike long balls over the top of the CMU defense. A pass of some 60 yards in the 35
th minute provided a chance. The ball found
Madison Drenowatz running downfield. Her marker caught up with her and kept inside position deep into the penalty area until she could poke it away for a corner kick.
Â
With a little more than five minutes left in the half, Drenowatz chased another lead as CMU goalkeeper Andrea Sipos charged to the top of the box. They collided, CMU earned a free kick, and Drenowatz came off for the remaining first half time. Sipos had one save as her teammates held Rochester to four shots, one on goal.
Â
Schechter frustrated the CMU supporters one more time in the second half with a pair of excellent saves less than 10 seconds apart. Helena Spencer fired from deep right wing. When the save was cleared by the defense, the Tartans intercepted and Tara Durstewitz hit a followup to nearly the identical spot which was saved as well.
Â
The gamewinning goal was scored by Taylor Cammarata off a pass from Alex Adams. On a counterattack down the right touchline, Adams found Cammarata near the top of the arc. She moved one step to her left and hit a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the goal.
