Transition Goal Helps Rochester to 9th Win, 1-0 Over Endicott

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Call it a counterattack, call it transition. Whatever nomenclature you use, done successfully, it can pay handsome dividends.

The University of Rochester scored on a counterattack to snap a 0-0 tie and go on to a 1-0 victory over Endicott College at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the ninth win of the season for the Yellowjackets and their eighth shutout. It's also the second time in the last six days that Rochester captured a 1-0 victory.

Endicott saw a nine-match unbeaten streak snapped with the loss. The Gulls are 9-4-2 overall.

This was the final non-conference game for each team. Endicott will play at the University of New England on Tuesday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game. Rochester has three matches left in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets will host NYU on November 1, Brandeis on November 3, then finish the regular season at Emory on November 9.

The winning goal came on a brilliant 60-yard run by first-year Tony Hypsher. Endicott was attacking the Rochester goal. The ball came out to Mohammed Thiam just outside the penalty area. He looped it ahead to Hypsher who beat an Endicott defender to it. Hypsher raced down the left touchline, getting a step on the Gull back by the time he reached midfield. As he accelerated, he created more space between himself and the defense. He cut towards the penalty area as EC goalkeeper Zach Regalbuto (three saves) raced out of the crease. Hypsher avoided him and drove the ball inside the right post at 60:12. It was his second goal of the season.
Hugh Curran
Curran got his 8th shutout

That set up a frantic 30 minutes as the Gulls pressed for an equalizer and tried to defend their own area from another UR attack.

Rochester goalkeeper Hugh Curran made five saves to earn his eighth shutout. Nine minutes after the Yellowjacket goal, he had to sprawl to stop a shot by Arian Pilja. With the clock below 14 minutes, EC's Max Robbins lined up a 30-yarder that sailed just over the crossbar. In the 85th minute, Charles Badji skimmed one wide of the right post.

He stopped Matthew Cronin on a point-blank header in the first half after a throw-in from Robbins. Endicott's top scorer, Evan Couchot (he had 18 goals coming into the match) shot from the top of the circle in the 46th minute and Curran reacted well, punching the ball wide for a corner kick. Couchot tested him again. A cross came in from the left and Couchot volleyed it wide.

Rochester had its chances, too. The match was barely five minutes old when Zach Lawlor crossed the ball on the break and Hypsher volleyed past the left post. Shortly thereafter, Mitch Volis crossed the ball to James Barata. His volley was blocked and the defense scrambled it out of the box.
