ITHACA, NY – The University of Rochester's unbeaten start to the 2018-19 season continued, following a 7-2 victory over Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon in men's tennis action at Glazer Arena.
Rochester (4-0) got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles positions.
Yifan Shen and
Tanmay Thakkar earned an 8-3 win over Sam McGrath and Colten Lavery to kick things off.
Sahaj Somani and
Peter Huang followed with an 8-5 win at # over Sam Fried and Liam Spiegel, with
Masaru Fujimaki and
Runjia Fang completing the sweep with an 8-5 victory over Minos Stavrakas and Michael Gardiner.
In singles, Ithaca (0-1) got on the board with a straight set win from McGrath over Fang at #2 (6-0, 7-6). Shen answered for UR, winning in three sets at #3 over Gardiner (6-2, 2-6, 6-1). Lavery then kept the Bombers alive with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Thakkar at the #4 spot.
Fujimaki battled Stavrakas at the #1 spot, with the Yellowjacket senior clinching the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Rochester would take the remaining points as well at #5 and #6. Somani won 6-2, 6-4 over Fried, while Huang defeated Spiegel 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
UR's next matches are a week away, as the Yellowjackets host Oberlin and Nazareth College on Saturday at the Goergen Athletic Center. The Oberlin match starts at 10 am, with the Nazareth contest beginning at 3 pm.
