Yellowjackets Fall to No. 4 Trinity in Series Opener

After losing two out of three on opening weekend, the Yellowjackets traveled down to San Antonio, TX to face off against No. 4 Trinity University (TX) in a three game series. Rochester sent Jack Denzer to mound on Friday night.

After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers opened up the scoring on a single with two runners on to take a 1-0 lead. Denzer would minimize the damage after he caught MJ Metz looking on a nasty breaking ball to strike him out with two on and two out.

After the third inning ending like the first one with no runs scored, Rochester answered in the top of the 4th. After a Kyle Trombley triple, Drew Bankovich hit a ground ball to third, only to be misplayed, allowing Trombley to cross home safely. UR would add on in the top of the 5th. With Aaron Craig on third, Jake Hertz on first, and no one out, Scott Pickering grounded into a double play, but Craig was able to score on the play to make it 2-1 Rochester.

The lead would not last long though. After each of the first three batters reached safely in the bottom half of the 5th, Jake Martin flew out to deep right field, but Jack Wisniewski was able to score on the sacrifice. Chaumette then singled to short and throwing error allowed two more tigers to cross home to make the score 4-2 Trinity.

The Tigers would add on two more in the 7th and three more in the 8th to for a final score of 9-2.

Hertz led the way for the Yellowjackets offensively, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate. David Reith, Trombley, and Craig each had a hit for UR.

Denzer finished the night with 5 innings pitched, 8 hits, and 4 runs, 3 of which were earned. Denzer also had four punch outs in the loss.

Rochester now falls to 1-3 on the season. The Yellowjackets will face off against Trinity in Game 2 tomorrow at 2pm CT.
