Rochester Sweeps Fredonia in Softball, 7-1 and 10-2

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Rochester broke out the bats in a big way on Wednesday afternoon as the Yellowjackets swept a doubleheader from SUNY Fredonia. UR won the first game, 7-1, and took the nitecap, 10-2.

This twinbill was originally planned for Tuesday the 16th. UR was scheduled to play at Brockport on Wednesday. Fredonia's field was not available on Tuesday. When Brockport needed the Wednesday date for conference makeup games, UR and Fredonia took advantage to play their twinbill.

Game One: Rochester 7, Fredonia 1:
Elizabeth Bourne spun a two-hitter in the game one win with one walk and two strikeouts. She helped her own cause with an RBI double in the third.

Alizah Ayon swung the power bat in the opener. She hit home runs in her first two plate appearances. Her two-run homer in the first gave Rochester an early 2-0 lead. Fredonia scored an unearned run in its half. In the second inning, Jen Carson doubled, Marissa Russo singled her home, and Harleigh Kaczegowicz doubled to score Russo.

Ayon opened the third inning with a solo home run. Rochester tacked on two more. Gianna Melillo reached on an error and Kathleen Desmond ran for her. Bourne doubled home Desmond and Carson's double scored Bourne.

Bourne, Carson, and Broomfield each had two hits. Rochester had nine hits as a team – two home runs and five doubles among them.

Carson had big hits in both wins.

Game Two: Rochester 10, Fredonia 2:
Addy Szczerba threw a complete-game five hitter and allowed one earned run plus an unearned run. She walked two and struck out seven.

Kaczegowicz, Carson, and Toni Anne Hahn had three hits apiece. Kaczegowicz drove in four runs. Her totals included a double and a home run. Every starter had at least one hit.

Down 1-0 after one, Rochester scored one in the second,  two in the third, one I the fourth. UR broke it open with four runs in the fifth.

Carson led off the second with a single, moved up on Alexis Pope's one-out single. After Meghan Bocyck flew out, Russo singled through the eft side to tie the score. In the third, Sammi Re and Ayon singled. A double play brought Carson to the plate and she singled sharply to left to score Red (2-1). Hahn followed with a double to right center and Rochester held a 3-1 lead.

A double by Bocyck leading off the fourth turned out to be the fourth run. She was bunted to third by Russo who reached first when her bunt was mishandled. Kaczegowicz singled her home.

Rochester added four unearned runs in the fifth. Carson was the instigator, doubling to center. Hahn's single put runners on the corner and Hahn quickly stole second. A passed ball allowed Carson to score Rochester fifth run, this one unearned. Hahn moved to third and came home when Pope's infield grounder was booted. Three batters later, Kaczegowicz homered.

Schedule Note:
With rainy weather predicted for Friday, Rochester's Liberty League doubleheader at St. Lawrence has been moved up one day. The Yellowjackets will play the Saints on Thursday with game one starting at 3:30 pm. The Saturday DH at Clarkson is still set in that position.
