Rochester Handles Oswego State in Season Opener

OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester women's soccer team kicked off the 2019 season with a solid road victory on Friday, defeating host Oswego State 2-0.

First-year forward Madison Drenowatz scored both goals for the Yellowjackets (1-0-0), while sophomore goalkeeper Emma Schechter earned the shutout, making four saves.

Rochester looked dominant on both ends of the field, holding a 25-9 edge in shot attempts and 8-1 lead in corners.  The Yellowjacket defense limited the Lakers (0-1-0) to just one shot attempt in the second half.

UR's first scoring chance of the game came after an odd-player rush by Jamison Seabury and Drenowatz up the right side set up space for Cesca Sheppard along the edge of the box.  The sophomore forward had plenty of time, but her shot attempt was blocked with the Laker defense recovering.

On the ensuing corner kick, a loose ball made its way to the foot of Liz Mastoloni, but her tough angle shot from deep in the left corner sailed long of the back post.

A foul in the box led to a penalty kick for Drenowatz in the 26th minute.  The first-year striker stepped up and calmly notched her first collegiate goal for the 1-0 lead.

It was 2-0 five minutes later, as a Sophie Wolf flicked a header to Drenowatz who found space in the middle of the field and drove a shot into the upper middle section of the net.

Mastoloni nearly increased the lead again in the 33rd minute, but her follow-up of a long free kick 30-plus yards out curled wide left this time.

Oswego applied its best rush of the game over the next five minutes.  At 34:51, Graisa Madden fired a hard shot from 25 yards out along the right wing which forced Schechter to make a diving stop to her right.

The following corner kick saw Jackie Vigliotti get a header attempt off, but Schechter was there to keep the Lakers off the board.

In the second half, the Yellowjackets controlled possession and outshot the Lakers 15-1 and managed six corner kicks.

UR's Robin de Jong had an excellent chance in the 72nd minute to score her first collegiate goal after a good run up through the Oswego defense in the right side of the box, but the Lakers were able to recover just enough and block the attempt away for a corner.

Rochester is back in action next on Sunday afternoon with a matchup against SUNY Geneseo.
