UTICA, N.Y. –
Amanda Strenk scored two third quarter goals, both assisted by
Maya Haigis, as the University of Rochester defeated Utica College, 2-0, at Gaetano Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Â
The win puts the Rochester record at 3-2 overall and comes just three days after a 4-3 overtime loss to SUNY Cortland in Edwin Fauver Stadium. This match was the start of what is a fairly length road trip of sorts for the Yellowjackets. This is the first of eight away matches in a nine-game stretch. Rochester plays at second-ranked Tufts University on Sunday in Medford, Massachusetts. The Yellowjackets play at SUNY New Paltz on September 21. They host Nazareth on September 24 before opening Liberty League play on November 28 at William Smith.
Â
Utica had an outstanding performance in goal by Megan Chamberlain. She made 17 saves and the Pioneers made three defensive saves – two by Ricki Haab and one by Mackenzie Stevens. Utica is 0-4.
Â
Haigis had two assists.
Rochester goaltender
Kate Kujawa made two saves for her second shutout this year. In the second period, she kept the ball out in a scramble in the circle which resulted in a penalty corner. On the corner, Haab pushed a shot wide and the game remained scoreless.
Â
Utica raced down on a counterattack with seven minutes left. Kujawa charged out to knock down a shot by Sydney Scaccia. Then from a prone position, she swatted it wide to her left ending the threat. Four minutes earlier,
Julia McDonough came off her defensive position at the post to cut off a deep pass from the middle with a Pioneer attacker waiting on the post to convert.
Â
Strenk and Haigis worked their combination midway through the third quarter (goal scored at 36:10), then again with 29 seconds left in the period. Haigis came straight up the middle of the field, fed the ball to Strenk, and she rapped it home from eight yards out.
