Field Hockey Edged by New Paltz in OT

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Rochester scored on the final stroke of regulation to tie the score against SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, but the hosts grabbed a 2-1 overtime victory. Rochester is 3-4 after the loss. The Hawks improved to 5-3.
 
UR held a sizeable 17-10 advantage in shots, 15-7, in shots on goal. Rochester goalie Kate Kujawa made four saves in 65:51. New Paltz goalie Mackenzie Mortimer recorded a dozen saves. Courtney Kruzikas and Jessica Ascencao had defensive saves for the Hawks. Maya Haigis had a defensive save for Rochester.
 
New Paltz took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. The Hawks earned a penalty corner. Jamie Wagner took it and fed the ball to Shannon Bernhardt. She returned the service and Wagner steered it into the Yellowjacket cage.
 
In the latter half of the third quarter, Kujawa made three saves – stopping Wagner twice – and Haigis made a defensive save to deny Ascencao.
 
Rochester stepped up the pressure in the New Paltz circle in the fourth quarter. In the last five minutes of the fourth, UR produced four penalty corners. One nearly resulted in a tying goal – Kruzikas stopped a shot by Colleen Maillie after a PC with 2:16 left. With five seconds left in the fourth period, Amanda Guido inserted a PC. The ball got to Susan Bansbach and she fed it to Kira Ozer for the equalizer.

The Yellowjackets unleashed eight shots and three penalty corners in nearly six minutes of the OT. Ascencao scored at 65:51 to give the hosts the win.
