Rochester Sweeps Last Three Sets to Beat St. Vincent College

HUNTINGDON, PA – Rochester made big plays down the stretch in the last three sets and because of that effort, the Yellowjackets posted a five-set win over St. Vincent College in the Juniata Tournament on Friday evening.

St. Vincent's took the first set, 25-13, then squeezed past Rochester, 25-22, in the second set. UR grabbed a 25-22 victory in the third set, claimed a 25-20 win in the fourth set, and won the match with a 15-13 victory in the fifth set.

The win gets Rochester up to 8-9 overall. The Yellowjackets are now 4-2 in matches that go to five sets. Rochester will play Johns Hopkins University and Messiah College on Saturday. St. Vincent is 5-11 overall.

Kellie McCrea posted a season's best 13 kills and added three blocks. Beth Ghyzel matched her with 13 kills and added eight digs. Allie DeRubertis hit double figures in kills (10) and digs (13), plus blocked two attacks – one of those coming late in the fifth set.

Tamera Shaw had seven kills and seven digs. Megan McHugh had seven kills. Megan Hauer had 13 digs. Sonia McGaffigan had four kills and one block assist. The BA came late in set five and she followed that with a kill to boost the lead to 14-11.

Sara Apanavicius had 15 digs. Renae Lapins and Isabelle Miranda shared 49 assists. Lapins had 26, Miranda 23.

In the third set, the score was tied at 17-all when Rochester went on a 5-1 flurry. Two of the points came from McCrea kills. DeRubertis had one, and Hauser served an ace. The fifth point was an attack error by SVC. That got the UR lead up to 22-18. It grew to 24-19 before two kills and a Rochester attack error brought St. Vincent within 24-22. DeRubertis ended it with a kill, assisted by Lapins.

Rochester picked up momentum from that win, bursting to a 21-11 lead in the fourth set before St. Vincent rallied. The lead was chopped down to 24-20 before Lapins set Shaw for the decisive kill and 25th point.

St. Vincent jumped ahead in the final set, building a 7-3 lead. Two mistakes by SVC and a McCrea kill (from Miranda) pulled UR within 7-6. The match was tied at 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, and 11-11. UR got a little extension after a ball handling error by SVC, then block assists by DeRubertis and McGaffigan. A kill from McGaffigan pushed it to 14-11. SVC rallied within 14-13 before an attack error gave Rochester the match point.
