The University of Rochester men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.
Â
37th-ranked Rochester (2-2) fell to #34 Rensselaer in its morning match by a 9-0 score, but then ended the day with some momentum after a 9-0 shutout win over crosstown rival Nazareth.
Â
Five Yellowjackets in the Nazareth match were double-winners.Â
Yifan Shen and
Tanmay Thakkar were 8-0 winners playing together at #2 doubles. The duo then made up Rochester's #1 and #2 singles players and combined to not drop a game, both winning by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Â
UR's #3 doubles pairing of
Antony Georgiadis and
Adrian Zhang won 8-1 and then both posted straight set victories in singles. Zhang won 6-2, 6-1 at #5, while Georgiadis was a 7-6, 6-1 victor.
Â
At #1 doubles, the UR pair was made up of
Runjia Fang and
Kai Yuminaga. They won 8-2 in doubles, with Yuminaga also playing #3 singles and earning a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. The final singles winner was
Connor Wagner who played #4 and emerged with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Â
Earlier in the day against RPI, the final score did not indicate the competitiveness of the match, as one doubles point needed a tiebreak and three singles matches needed three sets to decide a winner.
Â
After RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at #3 and #1 doubles, Rochester's #2 team of
Pasquale Procaccino and
Matt Resnikoff battled but fell 8-7 (2) to RPI's Zach Ebenfeld and Eddie Wu.
Â
In singles, Thakkar played #3 and fell 6-4, 3-6 and 10-6. Procaccino had another close call at #4 singles, dropping his match 6-1, 4-6 and 7-6 (5) while at #5, Yuminaga lost in another tight decision, 7-6, 3-6 and 11-9.
Â
UR's next match is set for Saturday at home against Ithaca College.
