UR Edges Out CMU in Overtime Thriller

A thrilling overtime from the Rochester men's team led to a 82-81 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at Skibo Gymnasium. 

With 1:13 left in regulation, Mitchell Kershner hit a three-point shot to give the Yellowjackets a 70-69 lead. He ended the game with eight points and three rebounds. 

In retaliation, CMU's Zach Howarth nailed a jump shot to put Rochester behind 70-71. 

With three seconds remaining, Patrick Benka drove for a go-ahead layup to give Rochester the 72-71 lead. Benka finished with a team-high 27 points to go along with six rebounds.

In the closing seconds of the second half, CMU found a way to take a 73-72 lead.

Benka managed to draw a foul as time was expiring, forcing the game into overtime after a successful free throw. 

In overtime, CMU managed to jump out to a six-point lead. However, contributions from Benka and Ross Gang allowed for Rochester to climb back. Gang finished the game with 13 points, seven assists and three rebounds. 

Down by one, Kailan Lee hit the game-winning shot to seal the game as time expired. Lee ended with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. 

With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to a 16-8, 7-6 UAA record. As for the Tartans, they drop to a 10-14, 3-10 UAA record on the season. 

The early efforts of Ryan Algier allowed for UR to remain competitive throughout the first half. He finished the game with a double-double that consisted of 12 points and 11 rebounds. 

Entering halftime, Rochester was behind by a 36-37 margin. The Tartans led by as many as nine points. 

The men finished 34-of-78 (43.6%) from the field, 9-of-32 (28.1%) from deep and 5-of-14 (35.7%) from the charity stripe. They forced CMU to 20 turnovers en route to their victory. 

The Yellowjackets will now prepare for their regular season finale against Emory University on Saturday at 2pm.
