Vassar Slips Past Yellowjackets 5-4

The University of Rochester men's tennis team opened up the 2020 portion of its schedule with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to visiting Vassar College on Sunday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.

The overall match couldn't have been any closer, coming down to a third set, winner take all match at #6 singles featuring UR's Matt Resnikoff and Vassar's Mihajlo Ivanovic.  Ivanovic sent the Brewers (3-0) home happy, rallying for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win, earning the matches clinching point.

Rochester falls to 1-1 on the year with the loss.

UR had two double winners on the day, with Runjia Fang and Pasquale Procaccino each picking up victories in doubles and singles.  Fang paired with Yifan Shen for an 8-5 doubles victory at #1, while Procaccino's partner in doubles was Resnikoff.  After doubles play, the Yellowjackets held a 2-1 lead.

In singles, Vassar earned the first point at #3 singles, but Fang responded and put UR back up 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mathew Yee at #2.  Vassar won the next two matches at #1 and #4 to edge ahead 4-3 in the overall match before Procaccino evened the score at 4-all with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #5 singles against Jeremy Auh.

That set up the winner-take-all match at #6 featuring Ivanovic and Resnikoff.

Rochester's next matches take place in one week on February 16th.  UR plays host to RPI at 10 am and then will play Nazareth College later in the day at 4 pm.
