A second consecutive day of double-header action saw the Rochester men's baseball team drop both games, 4-7 and 5-15, against Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday.
In the first game, Trevor Van Allen made his season debut for the Yellowjackets (1-3). Despite a strong start, the sophomore only remained on the mound through the first 1.1 innings against the Hens (9-5).
During the bottom of the second inning, Pomona-Pitzer managed to string together a 6-0 lead. As a result, Luke Boylan made his first appearance with the Yellowjackets in relief.
A home run by the Hens in the third inning extended their lead to 7-0.
In the fourth inning, the 'Jackets found themselves on the board after a two-out rally. Both David Rieth and Jake Hertz were credited with RBIs, cutting Rochester's deficit to 2-7.
A fielder's choice by Aaron Craig allowed for the Yellowjackets to put the game within reach, trailing 3-7 through the fifth inning.
A standout relief effort from Jason Cobert and Thomas Karpishin combined for three innings of scoreless baseball.
In the seventh, a pinch-hit RBI single from Rylan McNabb permitted Rochester a late run. However, the Yellowjackets were not able to complete the full comeback.
During the second game, Rochester gave the starting nod to Spencer Rojahn.
A wild pitch in the second inning allowed for Aaron Craig to score, as Rochester took an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Pomona-Pitzer rallied for 10 runs on eight hits. Despite calling on Nathan Slenska in relief, Rochester found it difficult to minimize the damage, trailing 1-10.
An RBI single from John Moses cut the deficit down to 2-10 for Rochester in the seventh inning.
In retaliation, the Hens put up another four runs in the bottom half of the inning, extending the disadvantage to 2-14.
The top of the eighth was bright for Brian McKinsey, who hit an RBI double to bring in Aaron Whitley and Craig. Pomona-Pitzer added a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, forcing Rochester to play from behind 5-15 to close out the game.
The 'Jackets will look ahead as they take on Whittier College on Tuesday at 3pm (PT).
