Yellowjackets Battle to 0-0 2-OT Tie with #15 Carnegie Mellon

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester assembled another strong defensive effort on Friday night and this one produced a shutout against 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The 0-0 double overtime tie was Rochester's fifth shutout this season. The Yellowjackets are 5-3-3 overall and will host 8th-ranked 8th-ranked Case Western University at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning. Carnegie Mellon is 9-2-1 overall. The Tartans are 2-0-1 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester's result secured its second conference point. UR is 0-1-2. The previous tie occurred last Saturday in a 1-1 duel at the University of Chicago.

Rochester's schedule is dotted with some of the strongest programs in the nation: 3rd-ranked Washington (0-3 loss at Fauver), 6th-ranked William Smith (0-0 tie in Geneva), 9th-ranked Chicago (1-1 in Chicago last week), #15 Carnegie Mellon. UR will face #8 Case Reserve on Sunday and will host #25 Emory on November 6.

CMU held a dominating advantage on the scoreboard heading into Fauver: 36-4 in total goals. This was only the second time the Tartans have been shut out this season (a 1-0 loss in OT to Misiericordia University).

The guests attacked from the outset, creating numerous opportunities to score. UR's defense was able to fend off the attacks: 20 minutes into the match, a long throwin from left wing was aimed for leading scorer Alex Adams. It was a little long and Rochester's Emma Cohen headed it away. Ten minutes later, Bre Valentovish was knocked down on a challenge, earning a free kick. It was played into the middle, looking for Helena Spencer but was too long.

Rochester goalkeeper Emma Schechter made six saves on the night. CMU's Maria Askounis boomed a free kick from 35 yards that Schechter fisted over the bar for a corner kick. Two minutes later, Jocelyn Mayer tried to sidewheel a shot from the left side of the crease. It was deflected for a corner. Schechter made another tough save in the 43rd minute. Sophia Bastek's long ball from the center of the field dipped at the last moment and Schechter batted it into the crossbar, then grabbed it before red shirts stormed the crease.

In the second half, Rochester started to find some seams in the Carnegie defense. Mia McGinty's long shot from right wing, 35 yards from goal, forced a save from CMU keeper Carolyn Botz. In the last five minutes, the Yellowjackets had three good opportunities: Botz rushed off her line and forced Natalie Kocsis to shoot past the right post after a thru-ball from Robin de Jong. Two minutes later, Kailee Sowers served the ball into the middle but Cesca Sheppard fired wide of the right post. In the final minute before OT, Megan Pung drove a free kick right at Botz.

Allie Hunter had a chance in each overtime period. In the first OT, the CMU defender couldn't make solid contact with a cross and the ball flashed past the post. In the second OT, she hit a long ball from right wing. It deflected off Schechter's hands at the back post for a corner kick which proved harmless.
