Women's Soccer Posts 2-OT Tie with #8 Case Western Reserve

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – For the second time in three days, Rochester posted a 0-0 double-overtime shutout against one of Division III's elite teams in Edwin Fauver Stadium. This time, it was against Case Western Reserve University, ranked 8th in the current poll of the United Soccer Coaches. On Friday night, Rochester dueled to a 0-0 double-OT finish versus #15 Carnegie Mellon University.

This was Rochester's third straight double-OT tie (1-1 at #9 Chicago on October 9) and its' fourth consecutive game against a Top 25 opponent – all of whom reside in the University Athletic Association (lost, 3-0 to Washington-St. Louis on October 2).

Rochester is 5-3-4 overall, 0-2-2 in the UAA. Case Western Reserve, which lost at #25 Emory on Friday for its first loss this year, is now 11-1-1.

UR goalkeeper Emma Schechter made three saves to pick up her fifth solo shutout. She has one shared shutout. Three of her solo shutouts have come against Top 25 teams: at #2 William Smith in September, home vs. #15 CMU on Friday night, home vs. #8 CWRU today.

CWRU goalkeeper Maggie Storti made two saves for her sixth solo shutout. Ironically, it was a Storti save that lit a bit of a fire under the Spartans. With less than 19 minutes left in the second half, Rochester's Sara Martin hit a shot from just outside the penalty area that dipped suddenly. Storti deflected it off the crossbar for a corner kick – which was harmless. The shot and save also ignited passion among both benches and the fans.

Sarah Martin
Martin hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute.

Case began pressuring, sending waves of attackers downfield. In the 77th minute, Merry Meyer skimmed a pass on a left-to-right diagonal into the area but Christina Hickson couldn't get to it. Hickson was a huge focus for the CWRU attack. She ran both wings and the visitors found her repeatedly. As the game clock dropped below 12:00 left in the second half, she dashed into the area pursuing a pass. Schechter rushed off the line and dove, taking the ball off Hickson's foot before she could react and get a shot off. Rachel LeBlanc tried a cross from right wing to the back post but it went over Schechter's head and out for a goalkick. Sophia Stellabotte fired from right wing for the top left hand corner but Schechter made the save.

Midway through the second OT, Anika Washburn ran onto a ball in the right slot and blistered a shot over the crossbar from five yards outside the penalty area. Washburn entered the game as CWRU's top scorer (12 goals, 6 assists, 30 points).

The two individuals who stood out through the match were Hickson for CWRU and Megan Pung for Rochester. She sat in the center of the defense, clearing balls that came into her alley and keeping the defense organized. Rochester's Tess Peterson made a clutch defensive play in the final 15 seconds. CWRU obtained the ball and played a long ball upfield. The Spartans tried to chip it to Hickson in the middle of the penalty area but Peterson got a foot up and cleared away the danger.
