PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester evened its UAA men's soccer record at 2-2 on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Case Western Reserve at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
With the victory, the Yellowjackets are 7-2-3 overall, 2-2 in the UAA. CWRU is 6-4-2 overall, 1-2-1.
Â
The Tartans came to Rochester with three wins and a tie in their last five games. In the University Athletic Association, they lost to NYU (0-3), defeated Brandeis (2-0), then tied Emory, 2-2 in double overtime on Friday in Atlanta.
Rochester earned its first UAA win on Friday night, defeating Carnegie Mellon, 1-0 after nearly a three-hour weather delay. Earlier this month, UR lost to Washington-St. Louis in Fauver Stadium (2-0), then was blanked at Chicago (1-0 in OT) eight days ago.
Â
Santi Ponce Ocampo scored one goal and set up another – in a span of seven minutes – in the second half. He broke a 0-0 tie in the 55
th minute. A Case Western Reserve defender headed a ball out of the box. It came to Ocampo just outside the area and he cracked a shot into the top left hand corner of the goal, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jackson Kallen (three saves). In the 62
nd minute, he played the ball wide left to
Othman Belhseine who continued further to his left just outside the crease. He spun and shot low across the face of the goal. The ball nestled just inside the post for a 2-0 left.
Â
Ocampo's goal did inspire the Spartans to search of an immediate equalizer. Less than 30 seconds after kicking off following the goal, Case's Matt Vatne turned and left-footed the ball to the far right corner. UR goalkeeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo made the save low. He finished with four saves to secure his sixth solo shutout this year. Rochester has seven shutouts all told in 12 matches.
Â
Tondo has six shutouts.
Lupica-Tondo was under constant pressure in the last 20 minutes as the visitors pressed to get on the scoreboard. In the 71
st minute, he jumped in a packed goalmouth to collect a corner kick. He collected with CWRU's Seldon Magruder, but got up and continued to play.
Nick Swanger helped him out in the 74
th minute. The Spartans had another corner kick (they finished with seven, six in the second half). Brandon Kim tried a header for the right side, but Swanger was at the post and he headed it away.
Â
Rochester is at Houghton College on October 23, then returns to UAA action around Halloween weekend – at NYU on November 29, at Brandeis on October 31. UR closes the regular season on November 6 hosting Emory on Senior Day.
